OUTREACH ACTIVITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED NUTRITION

The Department of Applied Nutrition (DAN) carries out a range of outreach activities within the local schools and the community. Here’re a few of our most recent outreach activities;

Establishment of the Nutrition and Wellness Center (NWC)

The services of the NWC is open for the University students, academic and non-academic staff, their families and those who are living around the university. Our services to the university community are free of charge. NWC at the WUSL can help to you if you are ready to change your lifestyle and eating patterns to feel healthier. The trained staff and registered dietitians provide you with the support you need to meet your health and nutrition goals.

Nutrition Education and Awareness Session

The Academic members of the department of Applied Nutrition conducted a Nutrition Education Session at Non Communicable Disease (NCD) clinic, Sandalankawa Hospital with the view of expanding the nutrition management services to village community collaborating with Sandalankawa District hospital to facilitate health promotion. One of the objectives of this session was to create an opportunity to engage in activities such as nutrition screening, assessment, conducting nutrition intervention programs and monitoring the progress of individuals and community as a part of charitable service while obtaining hands on experience in nutrition care process.

Many exhibits were showcased to educate and entertain the participants with general nutrition principles and day to day nutrition related encounters. A leaflet was developed targeting school children to give the knowledge on Nutrition, to be thinking before fulfill their hunger through eating and the way of having a healthy life & body through correct nutrition guidance.
