Dr. S Jayakody

Completed BSc (Hons.) in Zoology from University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, Post Graduate Diploma in Wildlife Management and Conservation from Wildlife Institute of India and the PhD in Zoology from University of Aberdeen, UK.  Postdoctoral research placements at SCIRO, Australia, James Hutton Institute, Scotland and IDRC, Canada.

 Started the career by joining the Department of Wildlife Conservation as an Assistant Director  in 1997 and in 2001, joined the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka as a probationary lecturer. Currently serves as a Senior Lecturer of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. 

Between 2018 to 2019, served as the National Coordinator for 18th Conference of the Parties of CITES. Also, served as a member of the National Environmental Council. Additionally, served as the team leader for the preparation of the 6th National Report to the Convention on Biodiversity in 2019. 

Currently, serves as the chairperson of National Mangrove Expert Committee, National Mangrove Task Force, a member of Commonwealth Blue Carbon Initiative, the team leader for identification of environmentally Sensitive Areas of Sri Lanka,, advisor to Department of Forest and Department of Wildlife Conservation on restoration of mangrove ecosystems and a Director of Environmental Foundation Limited.

  • Research interests include sea urchins and their biology, dynamics of coastal ecosystems and their management, ecosystem approach to fisheries management, policy and governance and impacts of human disturbance on ecosystem processes and functions.
