Prof. Premarathne graduated from University of Peradeniya in 2006 obtaining BVSc with a Second Class Upper (Honours). She started her carrier as an acdemic attached to Department of Public Health and Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Peradeniya. She has completed her MPhil in 2013 at the University of Peradeniya. Since 2009, she has been working as an assessor in the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) for conformity assessment. In 2012, she was appointed as a Lecturer (Probationary) to the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. She successfully completed her PhD in 2017 at the University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia.
