Dr GAP Chandrasekara of the Department of Applied Nutrition currently serves as the Professor in Food Science & Human Nutrition. She started her academic carrier as a probationary lecturer being one of the members in the first teaching panel of undergraduate Nutrition Degree Programme at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka in 1997.  She received her B Sc (Agriculture; specialized in Food Science & Technology) and M Phil (Food and Nutrition) from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Ph D from Department of Biochemistry, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. She has developed a unique research program for investigating the bioactivities and mode of actions of phenolic compounds of underutilized tropical food ingredients of cereals, legumes, roots and tubers and herbs in wellness and management of diseases. She is the author/ co-author of more than 30 refereed journal articles and book chapters and over 100 abstracts of conference presentations. She sits on number of committees of the Faculty as well as the University in varying capacities.  She further serves on number of national external committees including Council of Nutrition Society of Sri Lanka, Science Education Committee of Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Sciences and Advisory committee on elderly and disability health care services among others. She is an accredited teacher in higher education of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), UK.
