Prof.Jayaweera

Professor Ajith Jayaweera has been a member of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka since 1998 and assumed duties as the Dean of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition in 2018. He has over 25 years’ experience as an academic in the university system in Sri Lanka.

Prof. Jayaweera completed a BSc (Agriculture) with a specialization in Animal Science with honours from University of Peradeniya in 1993 and served as a lecturer in the Department of Animal Science from 1993 to 1998. He earned his Master’s (M.Phil) from the same university where he studied crop livestock fish integration in aquatic farming systems. He was appointed as a lecturer at the Department of Food Science and Technology in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka in 1998. With the upgrading of the Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University to Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Department of Livestock and Avian Sciences was established in the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition. He was a founder member of the Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition at the inception of the Wayamba University in 1999.

He has successfully completed three accredited staff development courses namely Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) at Staff Development Centre (SDC) University of Colombo, in 2002 and Accreditation of Senior Teacher in Higher Education (ASTHE 2017)in University of Colombo and Certificate of Teaching Methodology, Agricultural Education and Teaching Methodology unit, University of Peradeniya in 1995.

He involved in the curriculum development of the Bachelor of Food Science & Nutrition Degree programmes of the new Faculty and Bachelor of Science (Agri) in the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer (Grade II) and then he became a member of teaching panel in the Board of Study Animal Science in the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, Peradeniya.

From 2008 to 2011, he served as the Head of the Department of Livestock and Avian Sciences, Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition, Wayamba University. Prof. Jayaweera was the director of Staff Development programme from 2014 to 2018 and He is the Course Facilitator of ‘Certificate course on Staff development’ (SDC) and he is a member of the teaching panel of the Staff Development Centre of the Wayamba University and also a Course Facilitator of the Professional Diploma in Teaching technology and Methodology (PDTTM) from 2011 to 2020. He served as a visiting lecturer in the SDC’s of university of Visual and Performing Arts, Uva-Wellassa University, South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine, and Horizon Campus Sri Lanka since 2010. He was the founder of the Higher Diploma in Teaching Methodology and Education Management (HDTMEM) offered by SDC of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka for the school teachers and education Managers.

With his experiences in academic life, Prof. Jayaweera won professional development award “SEDA Accreditation as a Senior Teacher in Higher Education (ASTHE)” Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA), United Kingdom, 2017, International Accreditation as a Senior Teacher in Higher Education and also he was awarded with the International Accreditation as a Teacher in Higher Education by Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) of Oxford University in 2002. Not only he won an award for the best Research Student, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, but also he was the Best presenter in the annual congress of the Same University in 2007. In 1987 he was the best announcer and winner of the “youth Award” of the all island contest. Prof. Jayaweera was the Director of Career Guidance Unit of the Wayamba University from 2006 to 2008. In 2001 he became a student counsellor of the faculty and from 2015 to 2018 he served as a senior student counsellor. He was the Faculty Coordinator for the Career Guidance Unit and Staff Development Centre 2008 to 2018.

Prof. Jayaweera was the President of Sri Lanka Association for Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Section B (Agriculture and Forestry) in 2011 and served as the Vice President in 2010, Committee member from 2010 to 2012. He was the National in Quality Assurance for the Alternate Higher education in Higher Education for the Twenty first Century (HETC) – World Bank funded project, 2014.

Over the past decades, Prof. Jayaweera has published more than 90 subject specific research papers and 11 higher educational research in various national and international journals. And also he has published 21 books on Higher Education and Teaching Methodology. During his academic career, he developed few software programmes related to animal feed formulation, which is widely used by feed producers in Sri Lanka. He has presented many presentations both in national and international symposia.
